This cross features the names of French & Belgian towns on or near the western front where the Germans were said to have committed atrocities against the populations

During the Ottoman counter attack at Beit Ur El Tahta they were called from the reserve to help stem the counter attack joining the crossing of the River Aja in December 1917

Possibly lost during the Fall of Tobruk in which a number of South African troops were taken
