The winery takes its name from an important family from their area who was of Austrian heritage but whose family lived in Abruzzo for centuries. The last member of the family was Diego de Sterlich (1898 1976) who was a famous race car driver and co founder of the Maserati brand in Italy. He also dedicated himself to winemaking and helped preserve a focus on quality winemaking in Italy.
