While the United States was not directly attacked during WWII, the possibility was always there, so home front industries began producing supplies in case it became a reality. Blackout curtains were widely used in London during "The Blitz", as removing lights helped reduce the ability of Luftwaffe bombers to find their targets. With the curtains, people could still keep the lights candles on but avoid being spotted.
