The obverse blade is acid-engraved "Zur Erinnerung an meine Dienstzeit" (“In Memory of My Service Period”) inside a banner flanked on both sides by oak leaf branches and Wehrmacht- (Armed Forces) style German national eagles clutching mobile swastikas

and an acute supply problem brought about by the long distances involved in the rapid drive through France
