Originally recorded in 1968, Arias by Verdi and Donizetti begins with a selection of arias from four Verdi operas Luisa Miller, I due Foscari, Un ballo in maschera and Macbeth. This is followed by arias from four of Donizettis operas: Lucia di Lammermoor, Il duca dAlba, La Favorita and Don Sebastiano on the albums second side. The recording contains arguably some of the most natural and perfect singing of Pavarotti.
